Jessica & Ryan
White Wedding!
Personally, I hate snow and the freezing temperatures that accompany it. This is why I will never live in Boston (my birthplace) ever again! But in the lead up to her wedding day, Jessica insisted she wanted a white one. Jessica and Ryan chose the right location for it, in Tasmania's central highlands at Tarraleah. Apart from Cradle Mountain, Tarraleah is probably the only other wedding venue in Tasmania that might have snow, at almost any time of year. Unlike the bride and bridesmaids in their sleeveless dresses, I rugged up accordingly...just in case! My drive through the countryside was beautiful that morning with partly cloudy, blue skies and Spring green, rolling hillsides. The higher I climbed inland, the cloudier the skies became and as soon as I hit forested foothills the rain set in. Not quite cold enough to freeze just yet, as I arrived at Tarraleah Lodge to begin photographing the bride having her make-up applied. A pink heart was craftily hand-painted on a sign planted outside one of Tarraleah's charming Art Deco guest cottages, also painted the same soft pink. The boys got ready in one of the blue cottages while the girls got dolled up in the bridal suite at The Lodge, so it was easy to pop over and catch them putting on their ties and cuff links before photographing the beautifully decorated reception hall. As per usual, the ceremony took place in the historic Highland Church, where Jessica was overcome by emotion during the readings. Afterwards, we walked to my favourite spot in temperate rainforest for some portraits of the bride and groom. The bridesmaids were shivering as the temperature dropped, so I sent one back to The Lodge to collect a warm, furry blanket to wrap around themselves in between, and even during, shots. When they could no longer cope with the cold and rain, I sent them inside for a glass of wine by the fire but Jessica and Ryan braved the elements with me for a bit longer. As Ryan romantically wrapped the black blanket and his arms around Jess, white flakes suddenly appeared to surround them. Even I got excited, despite my aversion to snow and cold...so magic was this moment when Jess got her wish! With snowflakes in her hair, Jess entered her wedding reception and guests applauded her snowy arrival with Ryan on her arm. We all let it snow while partying on through speeches and dancing. By the time I left the hall, a blizzard had formed. Thankfully I had booked one of the lakeside cottages and did not have to drive home to Hobart in it. Instead, we all woke the next morning to find ourselves snowed in...
